A Calm, Confidence-First 11 Plus Maths Tutor

Preparing your child for grammar or independent school entrance? I am Jill Irving, a former Further Education maths lecturer, and I help children master the maths and numerical reasoning of the 11 plus through patient, one-to-one online lessons, without the pressure.

GL & CEM style · Maths & numerical reasoning · Online across the UK · From £25 per hour

The maths and numerical reasoning sections of the 11 plus reward accuracy, speed and a cool head as much as raw ability. With the right preparation, those are all things a child can build.

I focus on the maths side of the 11 plus, strengthening core number skills first, then practising the exam-style questions and timing until they feel familiar. Throughout, I keep lessons calm and encouraging, because a confident child performs far better than an anxious one.

How the lessons work

Skills first, then exam practice.

We begin by making sure the underlying maths is secure, then move on to GL Assessment and CEM style questions, multiple-choice and worded alike. As the exam approaches, we work through timed mock papers so your child knows exactly what to expect.

Every lesson is one-to-one and online, fully personalised, and paced so your child stays motivated rather than overwhelmed.

Before and after the 11 plus

Support that grows with your child.

Younger children can build their foundations with primary maths tutoring, and after the 11 plus I can keep supporting your child through KS3 and all the way to GCSE maths. You can also read more about me.

Common questions

11 plus maths tutoring questions.

Do you tutor the maths part of the 11 plus?

Yes. I focus on the maths and numerical reasoning sections of the 11 plus, which is where a lot of marks are won or lost. I build solid number skills, then practise the exam-style questions and timing so your child feels ready and unflustered.

Which 11 plus exams do you prepare for?

I prepare children for the maths in both GL Assessment and CEM style 11 plus exams, used by grammar schools and many independent schools. The underlying maths is the same; we practise in the format your target school uses.

When should we start 11 plus maths preparation?

Ideally around a year before the exam, usually in Year 5, so there is time to build skills steadily without cramming. That said, focused later preparation can still make a real difference, so do get in touch whatever stage you are at.

Will it be too much pressure for my child?

My approach is calm and encouraging, never pushy. We build confidence alongside skill, keep practice manageable, and make sure your child enjoys the wins. A relaxed, well-prepared child performs far better than an anxious one.

Are the lessons online?

Yes, lessons are one-to-one and online with a shared whiteboard, so your child can prepare from home anywhere in the UK and a parent is always welcome nearby.
