A Patient, Experienced GCSE Maths Tutor, Online

Looking for a GCSE maths tutor who can make it finally make sense? I am Jill Irving, a former Further Education maths lecturer. I help GCSE students understand the topics they find hardest, feel calmer about exams, and steadily move up the grades, all in friendly one-to-one online lessons.

Foundation & Higher · All exam boards · Online across the UK · From £25 per hour

GCSE maths matters, for college, sixth form, apprenticeships and future careers, and the pressure can weigh heavily on students and parents alike. The good news is that steady, one-to-one support makes a real difference.

As an online GCSE maths tutor I work with students at both Foundation and Higher tier. We focus on the topics causing trouble, build them up with clear, step-by-step explanations, then practise with past papers until they feel solid. Just as importantly, I help your child feel less anxious, so they walk into the exam believing they can do it.

How the lessons work

Clear teaching, built around your child.

Every lesson is one-to-one and online, so the time is spent entirely on what your child needs. I find the exact points where things stopped making sense, explain them in a way that clicks, and then we practise together until the topic feels secure.

As exams approach, we shift towards past papers, exam technique, timing and the questions that catch people out, alongside practical ways to manage nerves on the day.

What we cover

  • Number, fractions, decimals and percentages
  • Algebra, equations and graphs
  • Ratio, proportion and rates of change
  • Geometry, measures and trigonometry
  • Probability and statistics
  • Problem solving and multi-step questions
  • Past paper practice and exam technique
  • Foundation and Higher tier, all exam boards

Who I help

GCSE students, and resitters too.

I support GCSE maths students working towards their first exams, as well as anyone resitting GCSE maths after a near miss. If you would prefer a practical alternative to GCSE, I also tutor Functional Skills Maths. You can read more about my background too.

Common questions

GCSE maths tutoring questions.

Do you teach Foundation and Higher tier?

Yes, I tutor GCSE maths at both Foundation and Higher tier, across all the main exam boards including AQA, Pearson Edexcel and OCR. We work to the tier and grade you are aiming for.

Are the GCSE maths lessons online?

Yes. As an online GCSE maths tutor I teach one-to-one over video from home, so you can learn anywhere in the UK. Many families find online lessons easier to fit around school and busy weeks, and all you need is a laptop or tablet.

My child has an exam soon. Can you help in time?

Often, yes. We focus on the topics most likely to move the grade, work through past papers, and build exam technique and confidence. Get in touch with the exam date and we will make the most of every lesson.

Which exam boards do you cover?

All the main GCSE maths boards, including AQA, Pearson Edexcel and OCR. The core maths is the same; we just practise with the past papers and question styles your board uses.

How much does a GCSE maths tutor cost?

My lessons start from £25 per hour, depending on the level and what you need. The first consultation is free, with no obligation.

My child says they are "just not good at maths". Can you still help?

Almost always. In my experience that belief usually comes from a few key ideas that were never explained clearly, rather than a lack of ability. Once we fix those gaps patiently, confidence and grades tend to follow.
